Predictable routines can make daily activities easier to understand. Visual information and advance notice may help neurodivergent children prepare for transitions at home, school, appointments, or community activities.
Make the sequence visible
A short schedule can show what happens first, next, and last. Use pictures, written words, objects, or a combination that the child understands.
Prepare for changes
When a plan changes, explain what will be different and what will stay the same. Give as much notice as possible and allow time to process the new information.
- Give advance notice when possible.
- Keep one familiar part of the routine.
- Offer a small number of clear choices.
- Allow additional transition time.
Adjust the support
If a transition is difficult, review the information, timing, environment, and sensory demands. A clearer explanation, quieter setting, or longer transition may help.
